Emergency crews have closed a major Sunshine Coast road in both directions after an oil spill on Monday afternoon, causing chaos for afternoon commuters.

A truck carrying cooking oil has spilled its load onto the Sunshine Motorway in Peregian Beach.

Police reportedly believe the truck responsible for the spill may not be aware of the incident, which was reportedly only reported to police when a motorcyclist lost control in the oil and crashed.

The Queensland Police Service has issued warnings for drivers, saying this incident will cause significant traffic delays.

The motorway is closed from Peregian Springs Drive to Grays Rd and motorists have been urged to find alternative routes.

More to come.
