A notorious crash hotspot in a rural southwest Queensland town has received the green light for a major upgrade which could be completed by Christmas.
After community consultation in 2022, the Department of Transport and Main Roads is now preparing for the construction of a roundabout at the intersection of Warwick and Forde streets in Allora.
The upgrade comes off the back of a number of safety concerns raised by the community.
Safety improvements will allow for a reduction in speeding from the north-south direction and through the roundabout, zebra crossings at all legs, a footpath and connecting ramps at all corners of the intersection.
Vehicles travelling on Forde St will no longer have right of way at the intersection, with the construction of the roundabout forcing motorists to slow down and give way to vehicles already on the roundabout.
TMR acting regional director for Southern Queensland Paul Stenhouse noted the intersection’s propensity for crashes.
“There have been several crashes at the Forde St and Warwick St intersection in recent years, and this project aims to improve safety at the intersection for both town-based traffic and traffic travelling through the area,” Mr Stenhouse said.
“In 2022, TMR asked for feedback from the community about installing a roundabout at this intersection. We reviewed this feedback and incorporated it into the design.”
Construction is expected to begin in August and weather permitting, is due to be finished by December 2025.
