Minor flooding seen throughout Southern Downs after heavy rain

Heavy rain has brought chaos around the Southern Downs region, with roads unusable due to floodwater, including a major Queensland highway. But it might not be over yet.

Reports of minor flooding across the Southern Downs have left residents praying for a reprieve, with further rain on the horizon.

Residents in Allora, north of Warwick have reported roads unusable due to flooding after heavy rain falling across the region from early this morning.

Maryvale Street Railway Underpass at Hendon and Allora-Clifton roads is reportedly undrivable due to flood waters.

One resident at Deuchar reported 50mm of rain in just the morning.

Flash flooding has also gripped a major thoroughfare, with the Cunningham Highway at Morwincha, near Aratula, closed due to water over the road.

A Transport and Main Roads spokesperson said all lanes are affected, with delays expected in both directions.

The Bureau of Meteorology is predicting further rain for the region Wednesday.

The weather bureau’s Christie Johnson said a trough extending from the northwest through to Central Queensland was expected to bring showers and thunderstorms to the southeast.

“We’re seeing quite a lot of humidity over the state, and we are certainly expecting to see that give us some further rain and thunderstorms today,” the meteorologist said.

Ms Johnson said the rain could bring flash flooding for inland areas of SEQ.

“There is the potential for any storms that develop to cause heavy rainfall, that could cause flash flooding,” she said.

Meteorologists predict a high chance of showers in the east, slight chance elsewhere, with the chance of a thunderstorm.

Light winds are expected to be becoming southeast to south-westerly 15 to 25km/h in the middle of the day then tending northeast to south easterly 15 to 20km/h in the evening.

Overnight temperatures falling to the low 20s with daytime temperatures reaching 30C to 37C across the region.
