Truck crashes into Annerley Road bridge

A truck has collided with a rail bridge protection beam in Brisbane’s south, destroying the roof and sides of its cargo compartment.

At 11.58am on Friday, a box truck smashed into the metal protection beam of a rail bridge on Annerley Road in Dutton Park.. The rail bridge had a low clearance warning and was 3.7m in height.

The collision caused the roof of the truck compartment to tear off completely, with chunks of the top and sides collapsing onto the road.

Large parts of the truck container and plenty of debris were seen scattered underneath the rail bridge and along Annerley Road.

A Queensland Ambulance Service spokesperson said two patients were assessed at the scene, but did not require transport.

QFES crews also assisted at the scene for a minor leak to the truck.

Dozens of witnesses could be seen working to clear debris off the major road.

By 12.13pm there were no longer delays along the lanes of Annerley Road.

The truck driver was fined $645 for careless driving.

A Queensland Rail spokesperson said train lines had not been impacted by the accident.

“Queensland Rail is reminding truck drivers to be aware of the height and load of their vehicles after a truck hit a rail protection beam just before midday this morning,” the spokesperson said.

“No rail services were impacted due to the truck hitting the protection beam, which is in place on the approach to the rail bridge.

“These specially designed protection beams prevent over-height vehicles from coming into contact with the bridge and significantly reduce the likelihood of a vehicle rolling should it strike the beam.”

In a 12-month period recently, there were 386 rail bridge and protection beam strikes across the Queensland Rail network.

Drivers who damage rail infrastructure can be fined from $1290 and four demerit points, to a $12,904 penalty if the matter goes to court.
