Showers and thunderstorms forecast for southeast Queensland over weekend

South East Queensland residents have woken to another wet weekend, as the threat of more downpours and isolated thunderstorms loom for the weekend.

It is part of a frustrating weather pattern, with 80 per cent of Brisbane’s weekends being officially ruined in 2025. And the rain gods are laughing, because more is on the way.

There is up to 15mm forecast to fall in Brisbane and on the Gold Coast today, with storms not ruled out.

The weather is expected to start to clear tomorrow, but the constant on and off rain has waterlogged many of the region’s parks and sporting facilities.

Incredibly, 16 out of the 20 weekends so far this year have been a soggy disaster.

The worst of it came in early March when Cyclone Alfred dumped almost 200mm on Brisbane in one weekend.

But January and February were a complete write-off – not a single dry weekend – while March and April were hardly an improvement, offering just one measly dry end-of-week escape each.

Long weekends? Don’t even ask. Persistent showers ruined Australia Day and torrential downpours drenched Anzac Day, while Mother’s Day was just plain miserable.

And tomorrow, the Bureau of Meteorology is warning of showers and thunderstorms, putting major events such as the Paniyiri Greek Festival at Musgrave Park and Doomben 10,000 on a wet weather collision course.

Bureau of Meteorology senior meteorologist Miriam Bradbury said the worst of this weekend’s wet weather would hit Saturday morning.

“For Saturday, showers and thunderstorms are expected through South East Queensland once again,” she said.

“We should see that wet weather mostly clear later in the morning.

“Winds will also shift to a cooler south to south westerly during Saturday, after a cold front moves across the southeast of the country.”

Ms Bradbury said today there was the chance of a thunderstorm in the afternoon and evening.

“Through the day today, showers are expected to become more widespread through southeast Queensland, with the chance of thunderstorms really increasing,” she said.

“We’re likely to see widespread, moderate rainfall across Queensland, including Central Highlands and parts of the Darling Downs.”

The start of May has seen persistent rainfall in Brisbane, with the River City having recorded around 35.2mm of rain over eight days.
