Woman killed in Sunshine Coast head-on collision at Coolum Beach

A startling picture of a Tesla wreck following a head-on crash that killed a 48-year-old woman in the Sunshine Coast has emerged as an outpouring of grief begins after her death.

Tributes are flowing for the 48-year-old woman, driving a Tesla, who died in a horror head-on collision on the Sunshine Coast – with locals saying it was “so sad” and “another unnecessary tragedy”.

The woman died in a collision with a Toyota HiLux on the Sunshine Motorway at Coolum Beach on Monday.

Police said that around 2.35pm were travelling in opposite directions on the Sunshine Motorway when the horror collision occurred.

A Palmview woman, the driver and sole occupant of the Tesla, died at the scene.

The other driver, a 17-year-old boy, was taken to the Sunshine Coast University Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Whole panels of the Tesla were missing with components spilling from the frame.

It was difficult to distinguish the colour of the car in the wreck.

Investigators are appealing to witnesses or anyone with relevant dashcam vision to come forward.

Forensic Crash Unit investigations remain ongoing.

Sunshine Coast locals have taken to social media to share their condolences for the woman.

“This is so sad,” Karen Leigh.

“Another unnecessary tragedy,” Danny Youlden said.

“This is so sad,” Shamara Jarrett said.

“Thoughts are with the families.”

“So sad … rest in peace,” Sue Carter said.

“So sorry to hear that this morning,” Lynne Williams said.

“Sending love and strength to the family and friends involved.”

Earlier, a Queensland Police Service spokeswoman said the Coolum Yandina Rd southbound was closed at the roundabout following the crash.

A Queensland Ambulance Service spokeswoman initially said paramedics were assessing two people with potentially life-threatening injuries, still trapped in the cars.

Another Queensland Ambulance Service spokesman later said the other driver had suffered a head injury and was in a stable condition.
