A 39-year-old Gympie region man has been left fighting for life after he was viciously beaten at the notorious bus interchange outside Nambour train station.
Officers found the 39-year-old Two Mile man had sustained serious injuries after the attack about 3.15pm on Sunday.
It is understood he had been repeatedly stomped on.
A 33-year-old Maroochydore man sustained more minor injuries.
Detective Senior Sergeant Craig Mansfield it was a "vicious" and "brutal" attack.
"One of those victims has sustained some significant head injuries," he said.
"The other has a tooth missing from the assault.
"Both of those victims are unknown to each other and were both independently assaulted by the one person,” Det Snr Sgt Mansfield said.
"That male person we have not located yet.
“He is described as about 175cm in height, proportionate build, wearing a dark coloured hoodie, and also a black coloured cap."
Senior Sergeant Mansfield said police believed he was in his early 20s and was a threat.
He said police were hoping witnesses, especially any with mobile phone footage, would come forward to help them identify the attacker.
The attacker boarded a bus at the interchange after the attacks and then escaped the bus and ran off into bushland at Yandina.
ATTACKER ‘ERRATIC’ ON BUS AS HE FLED
Police have limited CCTV footage from the bus and some mobile phone footage from witnesses.
It will be alleged the attacker’s behaviour on the bus was also erratic in nature.
"It was seemingly random attacks on these two victims and appears to have been unprovoked at this stage," Senior Sergeant Mansfield said.
"We are concerned … he seemingly looked under the influence of some substances and was behaving quite erratically at the scene.
“He has assaulted two people randomly so is potentially dangerous to approach.
"There were no weapons involved; it was with his hands and kicks.
"We will be alleging there was stomping involved on the 39-year-old victim.
“He was seemingly unconscious on the ground and then he continued to kick him in the head and the back.
"It was a brutal attack.
“Police have not been able to speak with him yet. He's still in the Sunshine Coast University Hospital, intubated, in a critical condition."
Officers are appealing to any witnesses or anyone with mobile phone footage of the incident or CCTV footage of the greater area to contact police, including anyone who may have seen a man fleeing the area around that time.
