Inside the properties of Broncos past and present

They all earn six-figure pay packets of between $625,000 to $1 million a year but less than half of this group of 28 Brisbane Bronco players has put their money to work in the property market.

Of the 28 players listed on the Brisbane Broncos website, 12 have bought into the Queensland real estate market, according to data on property data analytics CoreLogic.

Two of the older players in the side, hooker Billy Walters and winger Corey Oates, both 29, have also invested in three properties each, according to the CoreLogic website.

Centre Jesse Arthars, centre Kotoni Staggs and prop Corey Jensen have also bought more than one property in Queensland, according to CoreLogic.

Halfback Adam Reynolds, the team’s oldest player at 33, has the most expensive property.

He and wife Tallara snapped up a six-bedroom house at Bunya, north of Brisbane, for $2.15 million in September 2021, after Reynolds left the South Sydney Rabbitohs and sold his Sydney house for $2.265 million.

The next most expensive property purchase by a current Bronco was made by 25-year-old Staggs, who spent $1.71 million on a five-bedroom house in Hendra’s up-market Ure St in August.

The property has full security, two built-in ovens, dishwasher, and a large butler’s pantry which includes its own sink.

Staggs also owns a four-bedroom house in Upper Kedron which he bought for $930,000 in September 2021, according to CoreLogic data.

At the age of 29, Corey Jensen has also invested some of his hard-eared cash into property.

He paid $767,500 for a three-bedroom house in Bray Park in Moreton Bay Regional area in October 2022 and $390,000 for a four-bedroom house in Bohle Plains in Townsville, where he is from.

The youngest Broncos to stag into the property market are 23-year-olds prop Payne Haas and hooker Cory Paix.

Haas, who signed a $1 million contract with the team and had a stellar year despite family problems, shelled out $590,000 for a four-bedroom unit at in Indooroopilly in August 2019, according to CoreLogic data.

Paix spent $749,000 for a three-bedroom house in Albany Creek in 2021.

Deine Mariner, Delouise Hoeter, Ezra Mam, Jock Madden, Reece Walsh, Selwyn Cobbo, Tristan Sailor, Benjamin Te Kura, Blake Mozer, Brendan Piakura, Fletcher Baker, Jaiyden Hunt, Jordan Riki, Martin Taupau and Xavier Willison do not have listings registered for property purchases on CoreLogic.

Age and playing away from home may be factors for some players not buying up big in the real estate market.

Here we step inside some of the stunning property purchases of Brisbane Broncos past and present and what their investment looked like when they bought in, according to CoreLogic.

Broncos centre Jesse Arthars, who solidified his spot in the starting line-up this year and became the preferred choice as a winger over veteran player Corey Oates, owns two properties with his younger brother Stellan.

The Bronco and his brother bought the Burleigh Heads property in August last year for $959,000.

It was the first time in 21 years that the 600 sqm property had been on the market.

The four-bedroom house was advertised as a neat and tidy one-storey brick home just a short drive to beaches, Burleigh Stocklands shopping centre, James St restaurants and cafes.

The master bedroom has an ensuite and is at the front of the house, away from the three remaining bedrooms which are serviced by a large bathroom and separate toilet and spacious laundry with external access. Additional benefits include an alarm system, ceiling fans in all rooms, airconditioning, low-maintenance gardens, a fully fenced block, double lockup garage and an open plan living and dining area. There is also an outdoor undercover patio for barbecues.

Jesse and Stellan also both own another property at 15 Stirling Circuit, Pimpama, which they bought in January 2020 for $269,000. The four bedroom, two bathroom and two car house is currently advertised for rent of $800 a week through Ray White Pimpama.

Broncos back-rower Kurt Capewell is set to sign a three-year deal with the Warriors after meeting with coach Andrew Webster. The 30-year-old bought his four-bedroom house in Nudgee in May this year. The property was last sold in August 2009 for $717,000. The two-storey house was advertised as having a designer kitchen fully ducted airconditioning, and a ducted vacuum cleaning system. It has two lockup garages and is carpeted.

Capewell’s property is the team’s third most expensive, according to RP data figures in November.

Broncos prop Patrick Carrigan bought a property at Holland Park West for $640,000 in March 2019. The UQ Bachelor of Physiotherapy (Honours) student was one of six registered bidders and bought the deceased estate at auction. The purchase will keep alive some cherished childhood memories for the league player, whose aunt lived two doors up from the house.

Place Bulimba agent Shane Hicks said the house had been owned by the same man for 64 years, before he died just after his 100th birthday.

Mr Hicks said as a young, promising junior footballer Carrigan would often wander down the street and talk to “old Harold”, who was a massive Broncos fan.

The property was advertised at the time as “a rare, affordable opportunity to live, renovate or knock down” the house to build your dream home on 605 sqm. The site has a 15m frontage with northerly aspect to the rear and potential city views in the highly desirable Holland Park West. The traditional post-war home has timber floorboards, a corrugated iron roof, and a back veranda. The house has three large bedrooms, a central renovated bathroom, separate toilet, spacious kitchen and is less than 10km to the Brisbane CBD. It is a short walk to public transport, cafes, shops and Glindemann Park, while Westfield Garden City Shopping Centre is only a short drive away. It is in the Mount Gravatt State School and Holland Park State School catchment and close to Loreto and Villanova Colleges in Coorparoo.

Flegler has had a good year, scoring the first try of the match between the Broncos and Melbourne Storm at Suncorp Stadium when he was captaining the team.

According to Core Logic RP Data, Flegler, 24, bought the property in 2018 before he won the Broncos’ Rookie of the Year. CoreLogic said the property had great spaces both upstairs and downstairs with a huge, covered rear deck overlooking a fully fenced, grassed back garden, complete with lockup garden shed and spa.

The listing also said the house had three bedrooms upstairs, with airconditioning in the master bedroom and a new bathroom and separate toilet. The new kitchen had an electric cooktop and oven, double sink, pantry and loads of cupboard space. According to the CoreLogic data, the house has polished floors throughout. Downstairs there is a separate entry which combines two large tiled utility rooms, one with airconditioning, and a new bathroom, laundry, single lockup garage and extra-high carport.

Flegler may want to move closer to Redcliffe next year, where he has signed a four-year contract to play for the Dolphins.

Talented Broncos prop, number 10, Payne Haas, began his property journey in 2019, buying an apartment off the plan in Indooroopilly for $590,000. The unit has since been listed for rent. CoreLogic data said the Indooroopilly unit complex, called “Vive by Mosaic Property Management” took luxury living to a new level. Haas is one of two Broncos players to earn the magic $1 million salary. He signed a three-year upgrade in August.

All the apartments, including the one that Haas bought, feature open living spaces with high ceilings and luxurious gourmet-style gallery kitchens featuring waterfall countertops and European appliances. An advertisement for the unit said it has high ceilings and large windows providing natural light and ventilation. There is generous storage along with walk-in wardrobes and additional linen and storage space. The open plan living and dining room areas flow on to large private balconies perfect for entertaining. The kitchen has benchspace, built-in microwave and integrated dishwasher along with ducted airconditioning throughout along with fans. An internal laundry with storage and dryer is included. The unit is close to Indooroopilly Shopping Centre, the University of Queensland, hospitals, sporting and entertainment facilities.

It was a big year for Hetherington who played 19 games for Brisbane including the NRL Grand Final which Brisbane lost 26-24 to Penrith.

He also managed to buy a $920,000 Clayfield unit in September. It was previously sold for $774,000 in 2021.

Jensen joined the Broncos in 2022 as a seasoned, hardworking front rower. Named Rookie of the Year with the Cowboys in 2017, the Queenslander has played 58 NRL games, including the entire finals campaign that saw his team make it to the Grand Final in his debut year. He was eager to showcase his hard work and his efforts paid off when he bought his first Queensland property in 2020 in Bohle Plains and his second property in Bray Park last year.

He is one of five Broncos who own more than one property.

The advertisement for the property, according to CoreLogic, said it was a perfect family home on a large 661 sqm corner block. The newly renovated property has three large bedrooms, a modern kitchen with stainless steel appliances including an integrated coffee machine, as well as a fully equipped kitchenette, office space and downstairs living areas which could be used as a teenager’s retreat or office.

It has an enormous undercover deck overlooking the pool and an equally large downstairs entertaining area by the pool. All bedrooms have fans and built-in wardrobes. It has polished wood flooring throughout and a projector screen is installed next to the pool. There is also a 5000 litre water tank, large shed, electric gate, solar panels. It is also close to Bray Park train station and 450m to Coles Bray Park and 750m to Bray Park State School.

Jensen also paid $390,000 for a house in Sandplover Circuit, Bohle Plains in 2020.

The 30-year-old winger and his wife Sarah bought the three bedroom unit in The Hills Residences on Brisbane’s northside after their son was born in 2021. The couple is not listed as owning any other property in Queensland. Pereira, at 30, is one of the team’s oldest players but was called into the side for the final round of the year match against Melbourne when Brisbane lost despite his two tries.

There are 91 terrace homes inside the complex which was built with a central community park. The first release, which included 27 homes, was priced at $478,000. The three bedroom and three bedroom plus study homes include a multipurpose room, two bathrooms, guest powder room, generous living areas, and private courtyard.

Oates and wife Tegan bought land at Samford Valley in 2019 with the promise of a peacefully positioned block of land on a “magnificent” hilltop that captures views across the valley. The block is approximately 2.3 acres and has a northern aspect. The heart of Samford Village is minutes away. It was one of the last remaining blocks that had both town water and underground power. There is also direct pedestrian access to the Samford Parkland Trail. It is less than 45 minutes to the centre of Brisbane.

Oates also has a unit on South Pine Rd at Everton Park which he bought in 2017 for $610,000 and a four-bedroom, two-bathroom house in Neumann Dr, Collingwood Park, which he bought in 2017 for $190,000.

Paix made his debut for the Brisbane Broncos in June 2020 and played 15 games for Brisbane in the 2023 NRL season but not in the NRL Grand Final loss against Penrith.

The Brisbane hooker has been given the green light to leave the club and permission to negotiate with rival clubs in Sydney. The news comes after the 23-year-old was axed from the 17-man team.

But, according to CoreLogic data, Paix is still holding his Albany Creek property which he bought in 2021 for $749,990. The property was sold with a white picket fence and manicured lawns. It has a fully fenced front yard separate to a fenced back yard along with a front balcony and an open plan lounge, dining and kitchen space with ceiling fans and airconditioning. Glass sliding doors open on to a north-facing covered entertainment deck overlooking the backyard. There is a second covered entertaining space downstairs with a huge lockable storage room, and access to the garage, workshop and tiled downstairs rumpus room. It has polished timber floors, downlights and ceiling fans in all three bedrooms, while the master and second bedrooms have airconditioning and built-in-robes. It is in walking distance to All Saints Primary School, Albany Creek State School and parkland.

Before Reynolds landed in Brisbane, the former South Sydney Rabbitohs sold his Sydney home for $2,265,000 after buying it with wife Tallara for $1,626,600 a year earlier.

The couple opted for a large six-bedroom home in Bunya on Brisbane’s northside. The central living area is the hub of the home and has soaring ceilings and the use of stone, glass and timber combine to create a family home feel. It has an open-plan kitchen which is equipped with European appliances, stone benchtops, and a well-appointed butler’s pantry. The lounge area has a wood-burning fireplace set into a stone feature wall. The rear patio overlooks the landscaped grounds and pool which features glow-in-the-dark stones set into the concrete. Adding to the energy efficiency of the home is a generous 5Kw solar power system.

Staggs had a powerful season playing his 100th game at the NRL Grand Final.

He bought the Hendra property in August for $1,710,000 at auction.

It was a big year for Walters who played his 50th NRL game and 26 matches for Brisbane. He also played in Brisbane’s 26-24 loss against Penrith in the NRL Grand Final.

At 29, Walters is not the oldest in the team but has the largest property portfolio with houses in Brisbane’s north, Ipswich and Toowoomba.
