First court mention for fire-accused mother

A lawyer for a Toowoomba mother charged with murdering three of her children in a horror house fire has visited her in hospital, a court has heard.

Ellouisa Patricia Brighton, 36, was charged earlier this week with three counts of murder, three counts of attempted murder and one count of arson after a fire at a Harristown property about 12.30am on May 7.

A nine-year-old boy, a seven-year-old girl and a four-year-old girl died after the fire, while Brighton, her 34-year-old male partner, and others escaped.

The nine-year-old died inside the house and the two girls later died in hospital.

Brisbane Magistrates Court heard at the case’s first mention on Tuesday afternoon that Brighton was “still in hospital and comatose.”

Prosecutor Jordan Theed asked the court to adjourn the matter to Friday to “see if she’s woken up yet”.

On Friday, defence lawyer Kara Murphy from Kilroy & Callaghan Lawyers told the court she had attended on Brighton in hospital that morning.

She requested the matter be moved to Toowoomba.

Magistrate Peter Saggers ordered a brief of evidence be disclosed to the defense by July 21.

Brighton was remanded in custody for the matter’s next mention at Toowoomba Magistrates Court on August 19.

Ms Murphy declined to answer questions about her client’s condition outside.
