A 13-year-old girl has been hailed for her bravery after confronting a group of masked intruders who stormed her family home in broad daylight.
The teenager was home when three men, armed and wearing balaclavas, forced their way into the Rochedale property around 4pm on Friday.
The girl’s screams as she was confronted by the intruders were captured on CCTV provided to The Courier-Mail, with the startled intruders then fleeing the home empty-handed.
Police have now asked for public assistance to help find the trio, who left the scene in a blue Mazda CX8 with Queensland registration 407 HR6 that was stolen from West End on Thursday night.
In the video, the trio dressed in all black can be seen fleeing on foot from the property and into a black sedan getaway car parked outside.
Later they confronted another resident with what was believed to be a machete.
The girl’s father told The Courier Mail her daughter was “okay” following the terrifying confrontation.
“She is with the family, it was a complete invasion of privacy,” he said.
He said the family felt unsafe in their home. “Unsafe is an understatement,” she said.
Rochedale South Neighbourhood Crime Watchers Damion Douglass said the family had been left “traumatised” by the event.
“She was confronted by three men with weapons and she was very brave her screams were quite hard hitting,” he said.
“They are very traumatised by the event.”
Mr Douglass said one of the intruders smashed through a window to gain entry, then unlocked the door for the other two, but the group fled within 20 seconds of being confronted.
“On the way out, there was a resident that was driving and they were confronted with what looked to be a machete and swiped at their car on their way into the street,” he said.
“They activated sophisticated cameras in the area so we were able to capture the footage.”
In the space of 24 hours the neighbourhood was hit by a second break and enter and in response Mr Douglass said patrols had ramped up.
“There were reports of people taking photos of those houses two weeks ago,” he said.
“Then early this morning there was a break in around the area where intruders slashed through the screens to get through the property and the residents were home during this invasion.
“There are about 12 patrols in the community now and they are ready to rock and roll.”
The group was founded by Mr Douglass several months ago, and members continue to patrol their own streets and post live as crime is happening to warn neighbours.
“Communication [between police] has opened up and they’re taking things seriously there was a guy arrested this week for multiple thefts over a period of three months. I think the community are aware and if it wasn't for those cameras yesterday we would not have captured what they did yesterday,” he said.
In an interview obtained from Nine News, the 13 year-old victim said,
‘All I remembered was i just screamed and I ran out the front door and just broke down,’
‘I was literally terrified, like I straight away ran from the office to come back home,’ the teenager’s father said.
‘She did a good job.’
‘I was drawing in my room and I heard a scream, so I looked out my window and saw this girl crying and a black car just drove away,’ witness, 11 year old, Mischa Bonavia, said.
