“As a former Premier and Treasurer of Tasmania, Peter has a deep connection with the Tasmanian community, as well as networks across all levels of government, the private sector and not-for-profit sectors,” a statement from Migrant Resource Centre Tasmania said.
“In addition to his experience in leadership and finance, his lived experience as a migrant provides him with an understanding of both the challenges and the opportunities for those who arrive here and ultimately choose to call Tasmania home.
“This understanding has enriched his vision for the future potential of the MRC Tas and multiculturalism in Tasmania especially the rich and deep contribution that migrants can make to the fabric of our communities.
“We are particularly excited to have Peter joining as Chair to guide the MRC Tas into its next strategic plan.”
Migrant Resource Centre Tasmania also sent their best wishes to outgoing chair, Sonia Caton.
“Her contribution to the organisation has been outstanding both as a board member since 2018 and especially as Chair during the challenging last 12 months as we transitioned out of the worst of Covid.
“Her background and deep understanding of the sector has been invaluable and she leaves the organisation with a strong foundation to support and empower migrants and refugees to settle here and importantly live fulfilling lives whilst enriching our community.”
