LOCK in the weekend of January 18-21 — this is the date earmarked for the span of the much-maligned Bridge of Remembrance to finally be lifted into place.
Contractor Fulton Hogan has informed Hobart City Council it has received approval from the Department of State Growth to lift the span of the bridge on that weekend.
The Tasman Highway will be closed from Brooker Avenue to the Tasman Bridge from 7pm on Friday, January 18, to 6am on Monday, January 21.
In the event of cancellation due to poor weather, the weekend of February 1 to 4 has been pencilled in for the lift.
The bridge will commemorate 100 years since the end of World War I and was meant to be completed by Armistice Day last year.
The lift was originally planned for the weekend of October 12 to 14, but was delayed because the contractor was not satisfied with the finish of the cladding.

It was then rescheduled for the weekend of November 2 to 4, but was cancelled because of bad weather.
Bad weather once again foiled plans for the works to happen on the November 23-25 weekend.
Hobart City Council general manager Nick Heath apologised to residents for the inconvenience.
“We apologise to all residents for the inconvenience, however I am confident that the Bridge of Remembrance will be a fantastic addition to the infrastructure of the city,” he said.
RACT Group CEO Harvey Lennon urged motorists, including tourists, to be prepared for the highway closure.
“Preparation is key during this period — avoid unnecessary travel, take alternate routes such as the Bowen Bridge if possible and leave plenty of time to get to destinations, particularly if travelling to Hobart airport from the western shore,” he said.
“During this time we would ask motorists to be courteous to one another, leave plenty of room between your vehicle and the one in front and check traffic conditions on social media sites, such as RACT, prior to starting your journey.”
The $11 million Bridge of Remembrance will create a pedestrian link between the Hobart Cenotaph and the Queens Domain.
