An alleged underworld figure who was involved in a “brutal arrest”, where he suffered a 10cm wound to his eyebrow, will remain behind bars on remand after being accused of stabbing his former partner in the head.

Dean William Carr was arrested on Monday afternoon when he was walking his dog at Waterloo Park.

Barrister George Thomas said his client spent three days in hospital after the “brutal arrest”, where he received eight to 10 taser strikes.

The 42-year-old father appeared via video link at Downing Centre Local Court on Thursday with bandages over his right eyebrow.

Police allege Carr forced his way into a luxury high-rise apartment on Bowman St, Pyrmont, shortly before 4.50am on Sunday and stabbed a 41-year-old woman before fleeing the scene.

The woman was treated by paramedics and taken to hospital in a stable condition.

It is alleged Carr’s actions breached an active apprehended violence order taken out in February this year, which explicitly prohibited him from attending the woman’s Pyrmont address.

Police also allege Carr assaulted the same woman just days earlier, in a separate domestic violence incident.

Carr was charged with eight offences, including four counts of aggravated break-and-enter and commit serious indictable offence, destroy or damage property (domestic violence), contravene prohibition/restriction in AVO, drive whilst disqualified and goods in custody.

He is also charged in a separate matter with domestic violence related common assault and contravening an AVO.

No pleas have been entered.

During Carr’s bail application, the court heard about his toxic relationship with his former partner.

Mr Thomas said it culminated into the alleged events which took place in the foyer of the unit block.

Magistrate Christine Haskett acknowledged the allegations were “concerning”, however she noted the alleged facts included the woman saying “what happens if I kill him first?”.

She later noted that “she could possibly, maybe carry out that threat”.

“I mean it’s concerning that those words were even said … (it) goes to show the toxicity of that relationship,” the police prosecutor said.

However, she did oppose bail, saying there were unacceptable risks, including Carr endangering the safety of the woman.

“It’s quite an abhorrent act … the physical assault,” the prosecutor said.

She earlier told the court she had seen CCTV of the alleged incident which showed Carr “grabbing” the back of the woman’s hair.

Mr Thomas said he had already briefed Carr about his obligations under the apprehended domestic violence order and said that his client did not want to press for an order to protect himself.

Carr was granted bail for the matter relating to the domestic violence-related common assault and contravening AVO charges.

However, he remains bail refused for eight other offences, including the break-and-enter charges.

His matter will return to court at a later date.
