Two men, one with links to the Alameddine crime gang and the other a solicitor, are fighting for their lives after a gunman opened fire in a suspected underworld attack in Sydney’s west on Sunday evening.

It is understood they were likely not the intended targets of the attack.

Alameddine associate Dawood Zakaria was shot in the head, and legal professional Sylvan Singh in the arm and leg, when a gunman opened fire on the white Toyota HiLux ute as they waited at a red light on Church St in Granville, underneath the M4 overpass, about 5.10pm.

Witnesses said the car containing Zakaria, Singh and two other men was set upon as it sat at the busy intersection, which is right on the border of Granville and Parramatta in the heart of Sydney’s west.

Underworld sources said they did not believe either of Zakaria or Singh was the intended target of the attack, instead believing another high-profile passenger was lost likely in the shooter’s sights.

“They definitely were not trying to get either of these two, they were in the wrong place at the wrong time,” one source said.

“They got the wrong guy again.”

A court heard in March how Zakaria had been among a group targeted in a broad daylight shooting at Brighton-Le-Sands earlier this year, in which no one was injured.

But on Sunday night he was fighting for life in a critical condition in hospital, with multiple gunshot wounds, while Singh who is believed to have been an innocent victim caught in the crossfire was said to be in a stable condition.

As a mass of eight ambulances rapidly descended on the scene in the minutes after the shooting, they were soon joined by NSW Police detectives and members of the State Crime Command’s Raptor Squad.

A short time later fire crews were called to a car fire at the intersection of Sherwood St and Todd St in nearby Merrylands.

It is yet to be confirmed if the vehicle is linked to the shooting, but the burning of getaway cars has become commonplace in gangland attacks.

Police cordoned off both crime scenes and an investigation is underway.

Police sources recently said they had become aware of increased tensions surrounding the powerful Alameddine crime clan over the past few months, and were investigating a number of brawls and other incidents, as potentially being part of an internal feud.

However in just the past fortnight The Daily Telegraph reported that senior cops believed those tensions were thought to have improved.

“This is not at all what we want,” a police source said on Sunday night.

“You have seen what a shooting like this can do in the past, this is very concerning.”

Police detained two men on the footpath at the scene of the shooting, where they were seen lying on the ground with their hands cuffed and in brown paper bags.

Sources said the men were believed to have been passengers in the car that was shot at.

They were eventually escorted into separate police vehicles and taken from the scene. No charges have been laid.

Sunday night’s attack comes just six days after the fatal shooting of young plumber John Versace at Condell Park.

The 22-year-old was gunned down in a hail of 10 bullets as he walked inside his family home, with police confirming he had no links to the underworld, and investigating if his killing may have been a case of mistaken identity.
