This is the shocking moment a young man was gunned down in the front yard of his Sydney home on Monday night, in a case police are investigating as a potential underworld hit gone wrong.
John Versace, 22, was shot up to 10 times by a masked gunman outside his family’s home in Condell Park about 10.30pm on Monday.
The Daily Telegraph has been provided CCTV showing the horrifying moment the young man, who was a plumber working for his father and whose death is being likely considered a case of mistaken identity, was snuck up on by a hooded gunman.
Only 20 seconds elapse as the gunman pulls up and murders Mr Versace, until he is back in the car speeding off into the night.
The video begins with a Toyota SUV speeding up Dalton Ave before stopping outside the Versace family home, at which point the gunman gets out, slams the car door behind him, and runs up the driveway.
“Hey, hey… hey, hey, hey… stop, stop,” a man can be heard yelling, before 10 shots can be heard ringing out.
It is unclear if the man yelling is the gunman, or a desperate Mr Versace pleading with his killer.
When the bullets finally stop, horrified family members of Mr Versace can be heard screaming, as the SUV’s roaring engine speeds off into the night.
A short time later that getaway car was dumped and set alight by the killers in nearby Fairfield East.
Police sources have told The Daily Telegraph that Mr Versace had no known links to organised crime and they are investigating if he was killed in a case of mistaken identity.
His killing, with masked gunmen and burnt out getaway cars, has all the hallmarks of a gangland murder.
Strike Force Harkstede, led by the State Crime Command’s Homicide Squad, will oversee the investigation into Mr Versace’s death.
