An inner west institution and a Bondi bakery have been slapped with fines by the NSW Food Authority after the watchdog found they had breached cleanliness and hygiene regulations.

Sourdough Bakery and Cafe at Westfield Bondi has been fined three times in the last two months after repeated warnings by the watchdog.

The fines were issued after the authority found the venue failed to maintain cleanliness standards, have adequate hand washing areas and keeping the food temperature under control.

Meanwhile, the iconic Marrickville Pork Roll has again been fined.

The hole-in-the-wall sandwich shop is famed for its Banh Mi but is earning a reputation as one of the NSW Food Authority’s favourites after receiving a slew of fines in the last 18-months.

The latest offence, issued by the Inner West Council on April 7, was for a failure to maintain accessible handwashing facilities.

The shop on Illawarra road was hit with six fines in six months from August 2019 to March 2020.

The chain was hit with three fines in September 2019 for failing to maintain single-use towels at the sink, using a handwashing sink for more than washing hands and failing to properly store food.

In January last year, it was fined $880 for failing to store potentially hazardous food under temperature control.

Just 10 days later, the eatery was again hit with an $880 fine – this time for failing to maintain accessible handwashing facilities, despite a previous warning being given.

In August it was disciplined for failing to store hazardous food under temperature control.

Following the slew of fines, the chain’s spokeswoman Theresa Nguyen said they were meeting the standards for the business to run normally.

“They have meet all the required (sic) for the council [to] let this business runs (sic) normally,” she said.

“They work hard for their children and wishing to bring delicious food for lots of resident in Sydney especially in Marrickville.”
