Delicious Sydney: The famous Marrickville pork roll

A famed Marrickville pork roll spot which has gained a cult following across Sydney has been slapped with two fines in one month for poor food handling.

Marrickville Pork Roll is lauded as Sydney’s best hole-in-the-wall joint for the Vietnamese delicacy and was dubbed the city’s most popular Banh Mi by Broadsheet.

The cafe is known for its cheap and cheerful rolls which set you back just $6 for a crispy bun stuffed with pork, French-style pate, mayo and pickled vegetables.

Perched in a small square metre grab-and-go shopfront on Illawarra Rd plastered with red signage, droves of foodies visit the modest cafe for its famous recipe.

But the popular chain has been hit with six fines over the past six months for food safety breaches.

The NSW Food Authority in January fined the cafe for failing to store potentially hazardous food under temperature control, setting them back $880.

Just 10 days later, the cafe was again hit with a $880 fine – this time for failing to maintain accessible hand washing facilities, despite a previous warning being given.

In August last year, the cafe was also disciplined for failing to store hazardous food under temperature control.

The popular food spot opened a new shop front in Darling Square, Haymarket in mid-2018 but just a year after opening its door, the outlet was also penalised.

The chain was hit with three fines in September 2019 for failing to maintain single-use towels at the sink, using a handwashing sink for more than washing hands and failing to properly store food.

The chain’s spokeswoman Theresa Nguyen said the “family business” was meeting all that was required for the business to run “normally”.

“They have meet all the required (sic) for the council [to] let this business runs (sic) normally.

They work hard for their children and wishing to bring a delicious food for lots of resident in Sydney especially in Marrickville.”

Ms Nguyen said business had recently been slow because of coronavirus and that council has since inspected the premises and given approval for the business to continue to operate.
