The weather bureau has issued a severe storm warning for the Northern Rivers, with damaging winds and large hailstones likely.

On Monday shortly after 2pm, the Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) sent out an alert, saying areas in and around Coraki would be the hardest hit.

“Severe thunderstorms are likely to produce damaging winds and large hailstones in the warning area over the next several hours. Locations which may be affected include Byron Bay, Ballina, Coraki, Alstonville and Woodburn,” the bureau stated on its website.

As a result of the warning, the SES have urged people to move their cars under cover and away from large trees, secure loose items around the house, stay clear of fallen power lines and to stay vigilant and monitor conditions.

For emergency help in floods and storms, ring the SES (NSW and ACT) on 132 500.

The next warning is due to be issued by 5.15pm.
