In a terrible turn of events, a van driver who fled the scene after a Northern Rivers crash with several trucks was struck by a passing rig moments later - and is fighting for life in hospital.
The 49-year-old woman miraculously survived both collisions on the M1 at Ballina and has been airlifted to the Gold Coast University Hospital (GCUH) where she remains in a critical condition.
The first of the two collisions occurred shortly after 9.45am on Friday February 28 on the M1 at West Ballina.
Richmond Police District were advised a van collided with a number of trucks but the female driver left the scene on foot.
Shortly after that, she was a struck by a truck on the M1 near the Bruxner Highway exit.
She was treated on scene by NSW Ambulance paramedics before being transported to Gold Coast University Hospital.
All the truck drivers involved in the crash returned negative breath test results.
A crime scene has been established and officers from the Crash Investigation Unit are investigating the incident.
