Perth on edge after potential Covid breach

A 38-year-old man was arrested in Adelaide River on Wednesday after allegedly entering the Territory without prior approval.

The man had travelled through rural NSW before entering the Territory at the QLD/NT border control point.

Police arrested the man in Adelaide River after he was found to be non-compliant with directions.

The man injured himself during the arrest after he fell and hit his head and was taken to Adelaide River Clinic for a medical review.

He was later taken to Royal Darwin Hospital for further treatment and a Covid-19 test before being transferred to Howard Springs Quarantine Facility for quarantining and further investigations.

Due to the officers being deemed as close contacts they are now required to self-isolate and the man has since returned a negative result.

Incident Controller Commander Hege Burns said the matter was still being investigated.

“Police are investigating the matter and it is likely the man will receive an infringement notice,” he said.

“I commend the officers involved who took swift action and were wearing the appropriate PPE to limit the spread of any infection, if the man in fact had returned a positive result.”

Two alleged Victorian border breachers travelled through NT to watch the AFL grand final in Perth

Victorian men who allegedly broke Western Australia’s border rules to attend the AFL Grand Final travelled through the Northern Territory.

One of the men later returned an “inconclusive” result from a Covid-19 test, and is being retested.

The NT News understands the pair travelled from regional Victoria to the NT on September 14, 10 days before it was declared a hotspot by the NT chief health officers.

They stayed in the NT for eight days before travelling to WA. Unlike the NT, WA had at the time declared all of regional Victoria a hotspot and required all arrivals to quarantine for 14 days.

NT authorities are not overly concerned about the pair, since they were required to test and isolate upon arrival.

The men tested negative and were allowed to roam freely in the Top End.

WA Police in a statement said the pair had been in a “high-risk jurisdiction” within the past 14 days and therefore were in breach of the McGowan government’s strict border policies.

“It will be alleged the information they provided on their G2G application was false, and had that false information not been provided they would not have been eligible to enter the state,” the statement from WA Police said.

Regional Victoria was declared a hotspot by the NT chief health officer on September 24, ten days after the men had arrived in the NT.
