An assessment in underway to determine whether the 15-year-old boy accused of stabbing another teenager at the Royal Darwin Show is suitable to go home.

On Monday afternoon, the boy, who cannot legally be named due to his age, appeared for the first time since he was charged with recklessly endangering life and possessing a weapon.

About 8.20pm on Saturday, police say the boy plunged a knife into another 15-year-old during a wild brawl at the Royal Darwin Show, where thousands of people were enjoying the family-affair.

The victim was stabilised at the scene but was rushed to Royal Darwin Hospital in a serious condition.

A short time later, the alleged offender was arrested at a Palmerston residence.

Appearing from Holtze prison via video link, the boy was flanked by his lawyer and mother as his matter was brought before the court.

No application for bail was made, however the boy’s lawyer requested a bail assessment report be ordered, with the boy hoping to live with his mother.

Further reports were also requested with a view to examine the boy’s personal circumstances.

“Noting that he is a young person that comes before this court with no prior involvement in the youth justice phase, it’s my submission that it’s important for the court and the parties on both sides to have some more information about (him) and his past.”

While the additional reports are expected to take up to a month, the boy will return to Children’s Court on August 4 - the same date the bail assessment report is expected to be ready.

Additionally, a brief service order was penned for September 8, with a preliminary examination mention set for September 22.

After scheduling the necessary dates, Judge Elisabeth Armitage told the boy he would remain in custody.

“You’ll come (to court) in the car next week and your lawyer will be able to see you here in court, okay?”
