Southern Districts have seen off another second-placed opposition in the Tiwi Bombers as they sealed the minor premiership and confirmed yet again they’re the side for others to fear.
Table toppers Districts have seen off a plethora of second placed outfits in recent weeks in Waratah and Nightcliff, and had another tough face-off against Tiwi, a side that had been in strong form.
Again the Crocs proved the strength and depth of their list surviving inaccuracies and the early run and gun of the Bombers to win 15.13 (103) to 9.3 (57).
Ominous signs loomed when Districts dominated the early clearance battles and laid on a run of four goals within two minutes.
Matt Shannon and Jed Anderson working off the supply of ruckman Wyatt Ryan were able to slip the ball out of the middle with precision.
Their targets of Steven Motlop and Will Farrer presented well, but a high-pressure Tiwi defence made matters difficult forcing Districts to make use of their depth in options.
Tiwi did respond and when they were able to rush out of the middle whether through the strong carries of Scott Bedford or speed of Michael Thompson they caught Districts out.
John Tipiloura was the star up forward with a couple of big scores to keep matters close in what was an overall accurate showing for the Bombers in front of goal.
Districts weren’t always perfect in their skills in the heat giving some opportunities away, but it was only a few more chinks in the armour of a side that has dominated the 2024-25 season.
As the game wore on they gained a further foothold into the contest, only made to miss in high pressure situations up forward against a defence containing Marlion Pickett and Braedon McLean.
The grind played in their favour with Shannon a force in the midfield to compensate whenever it looked like his side may be taking a backward step.
Districts were especially potent in the final quarter proving their ability to close out games as the Bombers faded late.
Even when Motlop came off, seemingly injured, the ball found its way freely into the Districts forward 50 where youngster Dan Murphy built his own goal scoring tally to four.
PREVIEW
Southern Districts will play their third top two clash in a row when they come up against a Tiwi Bombers side building form heading into finals.
The NT News and KommunityTV will stream every moment of this clash from 2.30pm on Saturday.
The Crocs have made it somewhat of a habit of beating second placed sides of late, seeing off Waratah and Nightcliff either side of their bye round.
Now it’s Tiwi’s turn to hold the spot and put their fast-paced game to the test against the side that has led for the majority of the season.
Districts have plenty of powerhouse performers with Jed Anderson and Matt Shannon often dominating through the middle alongside the likes of Matt Johnston and Jack Sexton.
Shannon is also one of the league’s top five scorers alongside Will Farrer and Steven Motlop, who have proved trouble for defensive outfits right across the season.
Tiwi have plenty of known scorers of their own with Kim Kantilla striking through the middle sticks every week since Round 7.
Expect him to see plenty of the ball again while the likes of Marlion Pickett and Matthew Parker combine with the Tiwi talent in the midfield to catch Districts out.
Last time these sides met they ended on exactly the same scoring shots, though inaccuracies from the Bombers meant they trailed by 20 points.
The full replay will be available at the conclusion of the game.
The NT News and AFL Northern Territory have come together in a partnership to live stream both the men’s and women’s Premier League games for this TIO NTFL season.
