NTFL 2024-25 live stream: Palmerston Magpies vs St Mary’s Round 7 live

The Saints marched on home in a brutal 40-point final quarter as they continued a tough start to the NTFL season for the luckless Palmerston Magpies. WATCH how the game unfolded.

St Mary’s may not have had their most accurate day in front of goal, but still managed to find a way to pile on the points against Palmerston.

Saints had their issues in front of goal, despite having an arsenal of noted scorers, but those issues were but mere hurdles on their way to a 17.22 (124) to 5.4 (34) win.

The 90-point loss by the Magpies followed its massive 171-point drubbing last week and despite an obviously improved defensive attitude, it once more revealed a lack of front-half cohesion.

Saints suffered a similar offensive system break down in the second half where their return was 7.10 which included a solitary goal in the third stanza.

That contrasted their start to the game where big forward Jackson Calder was always the target and his return of four early goals was just reward.

Palmy hit back with goals of their own to pacy pair Cameron Nyko and Lucas Edmonds but the board had an ominous look at the first break especially with Calder in such fine touch.

The second began with Magpie ruckman Ben Power holding his own at the taps but Saints dominated around the fall of the ball which put the black and white defenders under immense pressure.

Calder and then a brace from Dylan Landt, who was tagged for the entire game by a succession of opponents lifted the visitors, but poor goal kicking put a dampener on any advantage they gained.

The home side held their nerve on many occasions but had too few options in the front half and although kicking three goals, trailed by 40 points at the long break.

Palmerston clearly closed ranks across the ground in the third term and although scoreless themselves, restricted the Green Team to a solitary six-pointer through Luke Davies at the 12-minute mark.

Scrambling footy remained a feature of the final quarter until defender Kieren ‘Wiz’ Parnell booted his first midway through and then the floodgates opened, and five more goals were slammed home.

On song early was high-marking Calder and while his tally for the match was five, teammates seemed reluctant to isolate him; a few missed shots of his own didn’t help the cause.

“It was pretty tough in that second half, and we had a few of the boys running forward themselves which didn’t make my job any easier but that’s alright and while we probably could have won by a bit more, we will always take the win,” Calder said.

“Our goal kicking was pretty bad in the second half, and we’ve got a bit of work to do as a team especially with Districts coming up next and if we don’t improve on today’s effort, we will get smashed.

“Defensively we were good again which has been a feature all season, but our forwards must make their job even less difficult by not allowing the ball out so easy.”

Reigning premiers St Mary’s have a chance to cement their spot in the NTFL top three with their intent on a large percentage earning win against Palmerston.

St Mary’s came back from the brink of defeat to beat the Tiwi Bombers by a single point in their last clash proving their ability to find a way against the tough sides.

It was a best on ground performance from skipper Dylan Landt that steered the ship while the midfield brigade found their way into the contest through the second half.

Expect more of the same as Saints continue to mix in some of their younger players, while forward Jackson Calder will be on the hunt for goals.

That’s what Palmerston need to prevent following a thrashing at the hands of current ladder leaders Southern Districts.

The Magpies were beaten in every facet of the game, and it won’t get any easier this weekend against the reigning premiers.

The Magpies have some proven performers in their ranks such as Tyson Young, Cameron Nyko and Nick Hind who can turn the tide in their favour.
