A Territory brother and sister duo have got the chance of a lifetime after being picked from thousands across the country to attend the AFL grand final.

Darwin siblings Takiyah Wright and Joseph Jeffrey were selected as part of Team Auskick, and will get to present a medal to a member of the winning team from the AFL grand final.

Wright, 11, is a little sports superstar and passionate about both basketball and football where she has made a name for herself.

She plays for the Uni Rebels in basketball and has taken out MVPs over the seasons for the under-12 girl’s side.

She also plays for the under-12s St Mary’s team in the NTFL where her side reached the grand final last year, but when down to the Buffaloes.

Jeffrey, 9, is another following in his family’s footsteps playing both basketball and football whenever he gets the opportunity.

The only difference is he plays for Wanderers in the NTFL, following in the footsteps of his father Joe Jeffrey, who used to dominate, as well as his big brothers who all play at the club too.

The pair are incredibly passionate in their love for sport following with the Gold Coast Suns their chosen AFL team, because their uncle Joel Jeffrey plays there.

They also follow the Adelaide Crows in the AFLW where close family friend Danielle Ponter has played for a number of seasons.

The kids are incredibly excited for the amazing experience looking forward to both showcase their talent in the half time game as well as present the medallions after the big match is decided.

They’re barracking for the Brisbane Lions in the grand final, where fellow Territorian and former Southern Districts star Zac Bailey is playing.

Districts coach Shannon Rusca said would be very exciting to watch the Southern Districts junior take centre stage for the second year in a row after his heroics in 2023.

“He was pretty awesome to watch in the prelim final and gives young guys looking up to him the inspiration they could be there on the big stage too,” Rusca said.

“It doesn’t matter where you come from it’s just how much you apply yourself and about the effort you put in and Zac is a great testament to that.

“He’s showing people that you can do it coming from the Territory, he’s a Territory boy with family ties up here and it’s going to be exciting not just for the club, but for the whole NT community.”
