Darwin airport has welcomed Qatar Airways’ plan to buy a 25 per cent stake in Virgin Australia, saying it could bolster the Top End’s position as a key gateway for international travel.

On Tuesday it was announced an agreement was reached between Virgin’s owner, US firm Bain Capital, and the Gulf airline.

The purchase for an undisclosed amount is pending approval from the Foreign Investment Review Board and the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission.

The deal would allow flights from Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane and Perth to Doha, under a plane and crew lease agreement.

Darwin’s Airport Development Group said the news could also benefit the Northern Territory.

“This strategic partnership represents a significant development in the aviation sector and

reinforces the collaborative efforts of airlines to enhance connectivity and service offerings,” a spokeswoman said.

“For Darwin International Airport, this partnership has the potential to bolster its position as a key gateway for international travel and tourism.

The strengthened relationship between Virgin Australia and Qatar Airways may lead to increased flight capacity, expanded route networks, and improved travel options for passengers flying to and from the Northern Territory.

“As ADG continues to promote Darwin as a premier destination for both business and leisure travellers, we believe this partnership could foster greater economic opportunities, benefiting local communities and enhancing the overall visitor experience.

“ADG looks forward to collaborating with Virgin Australia and Qatar Airways to leverage this partnership and drive growth in air travel to and from the region.
