Police are revisiting the mystery of what happened to Ian Nichols

TASMANIA Police is revisiting a missing person case in a search for answers.

Ian David Nichols, who was last seen at Lake Sorell, Tasmania around September 18, 1989.

Mr Nichols, aged 51 at the time, and a group of associates attended the Vietnam Veteran’s retreat at Dago Point, Lake Sorell four days beforehand.

Mr Nichols remained behind after the others returned to Hobart. He was later reported missing by his family.

A coronial inquest was held regarding Mr Nichols disappearance in 2012 with the coroner finding that he is presumed dead.

Based on investigations to date, Tasmania Police believes Mr Nichols died on or around September 18, 1989 and is seeking information from the public that may help determine what happened to him and find his remains.

Detective Inspector Troy Morrisby said that police investigations were never closed and revisiting historical cases was routine.

“Families always deserve answers to what happened to their loved ones, and we owe it to them to find those answers,” he said.

“We’ve recently been in the Lake Sorell area revisiting Mr Nichols last known movements and are going through the process of speaking with people who either saw or spoke with Mr Nichols in the days leading up to his disappearance.

“We are asking anyone with information relating to Ian Nichols to come forward and speak with us.”
