Macy Edwards has a long road ahead but everyone behind her

The community is rallying behind a young Tasmanian cafe worker after a car crash left her in an induced coma, with family and friends describing her as “a larrikin who is full of life”.

TWO weeks ago, young Wynyard woman Macy Edwards was heading home from a tour guide training course in Launceston, when she was involved in a horrific car crash which left her fighting for her life.

“With a boundless sense of adventure and the world at her fingertips, our wonderful Wynyard girl has remained in an induced coma in Hobart for over a week since her accident,” organisers of a GoFundMe said in their call for help.

Already, about $42,000 has been raised, eclipsing their fundraising target of $40,000.

Specialists are working around the clock to assess and address her significant list of internal injuries, including brain and heart trauma, broken ribs, pelvis, collarbone, along with neck and tailbone fractures — some of which will require her to be flown to Melbourne when she is stable.

“The extent of her injuries and the impact this will have on her is still unknown, however it is expected to be a long and intense journey ahead for Macy,” organisers Allie House and Fiona Pearce said.

“Macy, just like her family, is a truly people and community-oriented soul. You may know her from Bruce’s Cafe or Cafe Umami, where she affectionately refers to herself as an ‘underwater ceramic technician’ (aka a kitchen hand).

“She is a larrikin who is full of life, has a love of people and is designed and destined for helping others. For those of you who know her parents, Celisa and Steve (Eddie), they are traits she has inherited from them.

“Celisa and Eddie have immediately put their lives on hold to support Macy at this time. Celisa, who is on the Waratah-Wynyard Council, has had to take a pause from her role in order to be in Hobart with Macy. Eddie has had to completely suspend operating his business, Sparra’s Gardening Services.”

The journey ahead for Macy is completely unknown at this time.

“This GoFundMe provides us the opportunity to give them precious time to support Macy without the weighty burden of worrying about their lack of income and future needs for treatment and care that will likely ensue,” they said.

“We will keep this page regularly updated on Macy’s condition, so you can follow her journey.

“Remember, supporting this beautiful family doesn’t have to be limited to financial support - your thoughts, prayers, sharing this page, and a good old hug for Celisa or Macy’s sisters and brother-in law, Kinae, Lakia and Themis, are just as meaningful during their time of crisis.”

In an update posted to the fundraising page on Friday, a statement from Macy’s family said they were “so overwhelmed by the kindness of people that brings us to tears”.

“We didn’t expect anything from anyone and just needed to be here for Macy, but this is truly just so heartwarming and a relief during a really tough time. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts.”
