A DAIRY worker with a history of violent offending has been given a 12-month jail sentence for hitting and choking his partner with the judge saying he should have curbed his attitude after being given a suspended sentence.
Curtis Peter Reeve was given an eight-month suspended sentence in March after being found guilty of assault in relation to a pub fight.
On Friday, Justice Tamara Jago activated that jail term and sentenced him to another six months in prison after he pleaded guilty to two counts of assault in relation to violence committed against his girlfriend just three months later.
Reeve had been drinking alcohol before both assaults.
“To not activate your suspended sentence would make a mockery of that order.”
In June, Reeve forced his partner onto the bathroom floor, called her a slut and hit her to the side of the head.
Eleven days later he again called her abusive names, hit her around the head, breaking her glasses, and choked her.
“The state alleges you choked her. You dispute that but pleaded guilty to assault,” Justice Jago said.
The complainant gave evidence in court that she was not choked — which contradicted a statement she gave police.
“It was blatantly evident to me she was tailoring her evidence to assist the defendant. I am satisfied beyond reasonable doubt he choked her and will sentence accordingly.”
Justice Jago activated the suspended sentence and backdated it back to July 2 when Reeve was taken into custody.
She also sentenced Reeve to six months in jail, two months of which will be served at the same time as the activated suspended sentence. He will be eligible for parole when he has served at least half of the 12 months sentence.
