Territorians are being invited down to the Darwin Waterfront this weekend for the much-loved Nepal Festival – an event that aims to celebrate the Northern Territory’s proud Nepalese community.
The free event – which will be held on Saturday from 2pm-1opm on the Peninsula Lawns – will have everything about Nepalese culture, from traditional costumes and music to food and market stalls.
Cultural performances by local, interstate and overseas artists; vibrant market stalls featuring handicrafts, art and souvenirs; and all kinds of cultural activities for families are just some of the many highlights from the iconic festival.
Later on, Darwin Waterfront will treat spectators with a colourful fireworks display from about 10pm to wrap up the festival.
Bhairab Yogi, owner of Nepalese food vendor Yogi’s Way, said he hoped he could share his stories with Territorians at the festival.
“We’re expecting to sell a lot of food,” he said.
“I like to share stories, and this is the story of food; food from the Himalayas to Tarai to the Hilly Region.’
“We’ve got momo (Nepalese dumplings), choila (a traditional Nepalese dish), goat curry, sel roti (a traditional Nepalese sweet, ring-shaped, deep-fried rice flour bread or doughnut) … we’ve got every authentic food from different parts of Nepal.
Mr Yogi acknowledged the line-up for food might be long, and urged Territorians to have patience.
“We’ve got a lot of food … enjoy the rich culture, food and performances,” he said.
