Man steals car as 15mo baby sleeps in back seat in supermarket carpark

Police are hunting a car thief who tried to take off in a stolen vehicle as a 15-month-old baby slept in the back seat.

Police are searching for a man who stole a car with a sleeping baby in the back seat from a supermarket carpark.

The red Volkswagen was parked in the car park on Maude Street, Shepparton, in northern Victoria.

The sleeping 15-month-old baby was left in the back seat while the victim ran into the store last Friday.

Police say the thief then reversed the car out of the carpark. When he realised the baby was in the back of the car, he placed the baby in a box and left it in the carpark.

The car was later found at Mooroopna.

Officers have released images of a man they believe will help with inquiries.

The offender is described as 165 centimetres tall, aged in his 20s to 30s, with a slim build.

He was wearing a black cap backwards, navy headphones, a blue Golden State basketball singlet, black shorts, light blue runners and black sweatbands on both wrists.
