A concept design for Hobart’s proposed new multipurpose stadium ready for public release by the middle of this year, the Macquarie Point Development Corporation has said.

In providing an update on the high-profile project on Monday, MPDC chief executive Anne Beach said the stadium design was a complex undertaking which would require some detailed work to complete.

Ms Beach said it was essential that stadium formed part of an integrated and activated space, and that it was never designed to be a stand-alone development.

“We are working with Stadiums Tasmania to capture user requirements, which will be part of the design and functional brief used to inform the multipurpose stadium design alongside a

team of experts,” Ms Beach said.

“This package of work will ensure the stadium is designed to perform the functions and

services required and will operate as part of the surrounding network of uses, connecting

spaces and access points.

“Importantly, it will be an integrated part of the Mac Point precinct.”

Ms Beach said the MPDC was currently building a team of experts for the stadium - which was recently declared a declared a Project of State Significance – which included a specialist design team, transport specialists to undertake detailed modelling and analysis, a quantity surveyor, and urban design experts.

Additionally, a panel of experts appointed by the Tasmanian Planning Commission will assess the project against its environmental, social, economic, and community impacts.

Ms Beach encouraged the community to visit the MPDC website for up to date information about a range of topics, including showing how the project will be part

of an integrated precinct at Mac Point, the multipurpose stadium footprint and information on

the planning process.

The century-old Goods Shed, a former railway building which is being considered for heritage protection, could be relocated in order to preserve its historic values.

“On our website … you can see how the stadium footprint does include space where the Goods Shed currently stands,” Ms Beach said.

“So we are looking at different options about how we can preserve and enhance the heritage values of this Good Shed.

“As part of working through the precinct plan we have identified this as the best-fit location (for the stadium) so we do have to work through how we manage that for the Goods Shed.”
