Local Government Adviser John Oberhardt completes tenure at Townsville City Council

An adviser brought in at a time of “disruption and uncertainty” for Townsville City Council has worked his last day.

An adviser, brought in at a time of “disruption and uncertainty” for Townsville City Council has worked his last day.

John Oberhardt was appointed by the then Director-General, Department of Housing, Local Government and Public Works Mark Crickland in September 2024, and served his last day on Wednesday.

Mr Oberhardt was to ensure the efficient operations of council until April 2025, with the option for extension if needed.

Acting Mayor Ann-Maree Greaney said Mr Oberhardt had been brought in during a time when many first time councillors were” trying to quickly adapt to their new roles”, the council faced a “period of disruption and uncertainty ”, alluding to the chaotic period surrounding now-suspended mayor Troy Thompson.

“John is one of Queensland’s longest-serving local government experts and while we knew it wasn’t going to be an easy task, we certainly welcomed his appointment,” Cr Greaney said.

She said Mr Oberhardt had an immediate impact and for the last months has been a “mentor and confidante” to councillors and staff.

“It is with mixed feelings that I advise you that the Queensland Government and Department of Local Government have recognised that Townsville City Council is now operating efficiently and affectively …”

Cr Greaney said together the council has shown “hard work and commitment can overcome many, many challenges.”
