Fire crews have responded to reports of a potentially severed gas line in the Townsville CBD, with hundreds of people evacuated from inner-city businesses.

Queensland Fire Department said two crews were on scene just 10 minutes after they were alerted to the incident on Stanley Street near the Willis Street intersection at 10.35am on Wednesday morning.

A QFD spokeswoman said the reports were that gas lines had been cut due to construction work.

Hundreds of office workers had been evacuated to Perfume Gardens but were returning to work just before midday.

The spokeswoman said two fire crews remained on scene monitoring and ventilating the affected area.
