Back to school road safety

A splintered tree and deep skid marks are all that remain of a crash site where a 28-year-old motorcyclist died on Thursday afternoon.

Josh Tyrell was heading down the Brooker Highway Montrose on a Yamaha when he mounted a grass verge, crossed a slip lane, slid down an embankment, and crashed into a tree.

The sheer force of the crash shattered the tree, sending a branch hurtling roughly 30 metres away.

One of his friends appears to have left a lone bottle of beer at the crash site where Mr Tyrell suffered fatal injuries before dying at the scene.

An off-duty police officer saw the crash, and an off-duty paramedic was one of the first to arrive on the scene.

Tasmanian Ambulance, police, forensic, and crash investigators arrived a short time later.

Tasmanian Police say that early assessments suggest that speed was a direct contributing factor to the fatal crash.

A police spokesman said they are encouraging witnesses to come forward.

“Police would like to hear from any witnesses who may have seen the bike travelling north prior to the crash, or directly witnessed the crash,” the spokesman said.

“Any drivers that have dashcam footage are also asked to contact police.”

Tree snapped off in fatal motorbike crash

A motorcyclist has died after being thrown from his bike when it crossed a slip lane and collided with a tree.

A 28-year-old Claremont man was killed on the Brooker Highway in Hobart’s north in the late afternoon while earlier a man died in a single-vehicle crash in the state’s North.

Police attended the scene of a motorcycle crash in the northbound lanes of the Brooker Highway at Rosetta soon after 4pm on Thursday.

“The bike has been seen to leave the road surface and cross into the grass verge between the Brooker Hwy and the slip lane out of Berriedale Rd,” Tasmania Police said.

“The bike has continued across the slip lane, onto the slip lane grass verge and down an embankment colliding with a tree, snapping it off and continuing further north coming to rest at the base of the embankment.

“The rider was thrown from the bike.”

The man died at the scene, after an off-duty police officer had witnessed the crash.

An off-duty paramedic was among the first responders.

Speed is believed to have contributed to the crash.

Earlier, a 62-year-old man from Evandale died in a crash on Woolmers Lane at Longford about 8am.

The man was reportedly travelling towards Longford for work when the small white sedan he was driving left the road and crashed, coming to rest on a tree. Tasmania Police Inspector Scott Flude said a driver travelling in the opposite direction saw the crash and alerted authorities.

“Crash investigators are interviewing them,” Inspector Flude said.

Investigators spent several hours at the scene.

“It was hot and muggy … and we will look at all aspects in relation to this unfortunate incident,” Inspector Flude said.

Two dead in tragic day on Tasmanian roads

It has been a deadly day on Tasmanian roads with two fatalities reported on Thursday.

A motorcyclist was killed on the Brooker Highway Hobart’s North in the late afternoon while earlier, a man died in a crash in a rural north Tasmanian town.

Police attended the scene of a motorcycle accident in the northbound lanes of the Brooker Highway in Rosetta just after 4pm Thursday, which was later confirmed to be fatal.

Earlier, A 62-year-old man from Evandale has died following a single vehicle crash in the northern midlands around 8am on Thursday morning.

The man was reportedly travelling to work towards Longford on Woolmers Lane when the small white sedan he was driving left the road and crashed, coming to rest on a tree.

Inspector Scott Flude from the Central North Division said a driver travelling in the opposite direction witnessed the crash and alerted authorities.

“They have observed the crash and crash investigators are interviewing them,” said Inspector Flude.

Crash investigators remain at the scene as they attempt to determine how the crash was caused.

“We did have a lot of showers last night and the roadway is wet,” said Inspector Flude.

“It is hot and muggy here today and we will look at all aspects in relation to his unfortunate incident.”

Woolmers Lane is expected to remain closed to traffic for the next hour or so.

In light of the crash Tasmania Police have urged locals to drive to conditions as the tragedy brings the state’s road toll to four so far this year – two more fatalities compared to this time in 2021.

The tragedy comes following another fatal crash at Longford earlier this month.
