The man accused of weaponising a stolen vehicle and driving at 150km/h directly at police with meth in his system has faced court for the first time.

On Tuesday, Jesse James Nagle, 32, appeared in Darwin Local Court from custody.

Mr Nagle was charged after an alleged string of offending on Saturday in which police say he threatened staff with an “edged weapon” at a Stuart Park smash repair business on Presley St before stealing a vehicle and fleeing.

He is further accused of driving the stolen vehicle erratically along the Stuart Highway to Gunn Point, where cops caught up to him.

In a statement on Monday, an NT Police spokesperson alleged Mr Nagle drove at police at 150km/h, forcing officers to take “evasive action” to avoid a collision.

The dog squad, the Tactical Response Group and a helicopter were called in to help find and apprehend Mr Nagle, who was found in bushland at Gunn Point by police.

Mr Nagle was allegedly found with an edged weapon and later tested positive to methamphetamine.

He was hit with a dozen charges including aggravated robbery, assault with intent to steal, theft, recklessly endangering life, driving under the influence of drugs, having a prohibited drug in his body, driving in a dangerous manner and driving an unsafe motor vehicle.

He is also charged with crossing double lines, causing a bushfire, carrying a weapon, and driving in the NT while disqualified interstate.

In court on Tuesday morning, Mr Nagle’s lawyer told Judge Greg MacDonald his client would not seek bail.

Judge MacDonald adjourned the matter to November 20.
