New destinations for the River Derwent Ferry Service are a step closer, as preliminary testing begins for new sites.
late last year, a new plan from the state government revealed six new locations along the river, which could be serviced by the ferry: Lindisfarne, Howrah, Wilkinsons Point, Sandy Bay, Regatta Point, and Kingston Beach.
Initial investigations are now taking place to determine the viability of a Lindisfarne stop.
“The four Greater Hobart Councils are taking the initiative to progress the expansion of the Derwent ferry service and help get the expanded ferry service happening,’ Clarence Council mayor Brendan Blomeley said.
“Geological testing is currently being undertaken at Lindisfarne by Burbury Consulting as part of preliminary site assessments for potential ferry terminal locations.
“I must stress this is very early investigative work to assess if the area in vicinity of Lindisfarne Sailing Club could support a ferry terminal before any decision to investigate the site further can be considered.”
In January, the four greater Hobart mayors said they wanted to secure $26m from the state Government to build new terminals.
“With the support of the Australian Government, our Councils have already secured $20 million in federal funding for ferry terminals at Lindisfarne, Sandy Bay and Wilkinsons Point and will keep working to progress this vital service for our city,” Mr Blomeley said.
