TASMANIANS have been given another reason to holiday at home after Pennicott Wilderness Journeys unveiled a new $1 million travel voucher program, amid continuing uncertainty about interstate border closures.

The Tasmanian government has recently imposed travel restrictions for those wanting to enter the state from Victoria, South Australia and New South Wales.

Pennicott Wilderness Journeys owner Robert Pennicott said the border closures had been difficult for businesses relying on interstate visitors.

“Over the past few months, we have seen signs that we were returning to pre Covid-19 levels of domestic travel but were cautious, knowing things could change rapidly.

“With borders shut down we lost 90 per cent of our business and we wanted to go onto the front foot and thank Tasmanians, and for us to get a cash flow,” he said.

Mr Pennicott said it was a great opportunity for locals to get out and explore what the state had to offer.

Over the next two weeks the company will provide discount vouchers of $50 per adult and $150 for a family of up to two adults and three children when a booking is made directly to their website.

The vouchers are valid for five years and can be used on the company’s various offerings including for Bruny Island, Tasman Island or Wineglass Bay cruises.

The multi award-winning business employs more than 100 staff and has been operating since 1999.

“We’re optimist there is a bright future ahead and we are doing things to ensure our sustainability for our staff,” Mr Pennicott said.

After shutting down for four months last year the company ran a similar offer on the back of state government’s own popular travel voucher scheme that sold out online in 40 minutes.

Mr Pennicott said the tourism and hospitality sector was experiencing another difficult time and they had been issuing refunds and cancellations as a result of the border closures.

“The whole industry is in a very tough period and if it continued for businesses to succeed to get through there needs to be state government or federal government assistance,” he said.
