TASMANIA’S newest high-end accommodation has opened in style, with the first guest being welcomed to The Tasman in the Hobart CBD.
The official opening of the hotel, part of the Parliament Square development, marks the debut of Marriott’s The Luxury Collection brand in Australia.
The Tasman, with 152 guests rooms and suites, is a reconstruction of former state government offices that brings together three eras of design — Georgian, Art Deco and contemporary.
General manager Stephen Morahan said it was exciting to be able to finally share the state’s newest luxury hotel offering with the public.
“I think it’s going to be a new central hub of the CBD,’’ he said.
“It's really rewarding to be able to provide our local community with such a great asset that is going to be shown on a world stage.
“The foundation of the hotel has been built around working with our local producers, suppliers, and development relationships to support local industry and get their name out there as much as ours.
“Our role is to sell tourism into Tasmania, not just the hotel itself.”
Mr Morahan said the new hotel, which was currently employing 120 staff, had seen strong interest and was almost fully booked until the middle of next month.
“I think there will be a real buzz around town with the Sydney to Hobart (yacht race) on this year ... and with the Taste of Summer being set up, followed by the fifth Ashes Test,’’ he said.
“From a tourism perspective, it’s great to see people starting to smile again.”
The Tasman’s first guest was Lucy Glade-Wright, founder and director of popular home, design and lifestyle website Hunting for George, which she founded in 2020.
“The Tasman hotel is a journey in itself through the history and culture of Tasmania in which every design detail has been considered to tell a story about the unique identity of this incredible location from the refined finishes to the art on the walls and overall guest experience,’’ she said.
The Tasman will also feature three dining concepts, including signature restaurant Peppina created by renowned Tasmanian chef Massimo Mele, a cocktail bar and spirits library known as Mary Mary, and the Deco Lounge for light lunches and afternoon teas.
