POLICE have charged an Ipswich man with armed robbery and various other offences after he allegedly carjacked a jockey’s luxury car at knifepoint on the Gold Coast.

Jag Guthmann-Chester, 22, alleged he had his white Mercedes Benz coupe stolen at Main Beach while he was heading to the track about 3.30am on Thursday, August 12.

A Gold Coast police spokesman stated the Mercedes was then found “in a business car park” on Southport Nerang Rd early Friday morning.

He said a “security service provider” alerted police, follow up inquiries were made, CCTV was checked and police made an arrest quite quickly.

Mr Guthmann-Chester said he had stopped to grab a coffee when his vehicle was targeted.

“I went to the 7-Eleven on Main Beach Pde to get it and then I went to Narrowneck Beach on the eastern side of the esplanade to drink it, I was only there for five minutes having a scroll on my phone,” he claimed.

“My car was still running and there was no one around at all and then out of nowhere I noticed a guy in a tracksuit set with his face covered on the footpath near my car.

“I wound my window up and thought the car was locked and before I had time to think he punched the driver’s window and made this huge crack.

“That was when I realised what was going on and I’m looking at the male who is in my drivers window, I tried to put my car in drive to drive off quickly but before I had time to do it, the door was opened and he leant in the car and had a knife pointed at me.”

Mr Guthmann-Chester alleged his phone and wallet were in the car, but he still had the keys, which meant the thief would not be able to restart the coupe if it was switched off.

On Monday, police stated a Rosewood man, 33, had been arrested and charged with one count each of armed robbery, unlawful use of a motor vehicle and driving a motor vehicle without a driver's licence (repeat offender).

He was expected to face Southport Magistrates Court on September 2.
