SHOCKING footage has emerged online of reckless hoons drifting through one of the Gold Coast’s most popular precincts as a passenger hangs from the window in clear disregard for their safety.

Members of the Mexican Hoon Cartel, notorious for their dangerous driving antics and well-known to police, took to Gold Coast Highway at Burleigh Heads in the early hours of Saturday morning.

Footage provided to The Bulletin shows a white station wagon running a red light and skidding dangerously close to light poles and bollards which separate lanes of traffic on the major road.

While the street appeared virtually deserted of pedestrians, one scene shows a bystander watching the brazen display from a nearby bus stop opposite popular venue Justin Lane.

Only moments later the vehicle comes just centimetres from colliding with a pole at the corner of The Esplanade and Gold Coast Highway, with the driver forced to slam on the brakes.

A spokesman for the club told the Bulletin the cartel was protesting about a lack of venues for drifting on the Glitter Strip. They would not disclose the time of the incident.

The incident comes just weeks after Queensland Police linked the gang to a series of illegal car meets across the city. Organised hooning has increased in an industrial estate in the city’s north in the past fortnight after a lull of two months.

Police told the Bulletin they are making inquiries regarding the footage.
