Gold Coast Titans co-owner Bec Frizelle opens up on humble beginnings selling newspapers

It all started very humbly for Rebecca Frizelle - before she became a Gold Coast Titans co-owner, university deputy chancellor and business titan. Read her story

Gold Coast Bulletin Women of the Year highlights

Talk about full circle. Gold Coast business titan Bec Frizelle - whose Gold Coast Titans are now a Gold Coast Bulletin Women of the Year sponsor - marvels at her journey.

The now co-owner of the Titans, Griffith University deputy chancellor, ex-Frizelle Sunshine figurehead and member of the Brisbane 2032 Organising committee was once a humble newspaper delivery and sales person.

“Talk about a full, I guess, evolution from a young girl on the streets of Surfers Paradise, literally delivering the Gold Coast Bulletin, or selling the Gold Coast Bulletin from a wheelbarrow from Whelan Street, to sponsoring a category (of the Gold Coast Bulletin Women of the Year awards by Harvey Norman),” Ms Frizelle reflected.

“I couldn’t be more proud than to be doing this and recognising the extraordinary contributions of the women on the Gold Coast.”

Her Titans - not just an NRL club, but also an NRLW team and first-class netball side - are sponsoring the Wellness Warriors category.

Reflecting not just on her own success, but ongoing embracing of opportunities to give back to the city she grew up in, she says: “I never knew what my future would actually be. All I knew as I got older was that I was incredibly fortunate to have been given so many opportunities by this incredible city that we live in, and I have grown up in such a supportive network in this broader community from my family, my friends, my business colleagues, and of course the people of the city of the coast.

“So anything I can do to give back to this city, to empower more people, to do more, to help drive our city forward, I’m certainly behind that.”

Asked about the calibre of women on the Gold Coast, she said: The Gold Coast has always been known for being an entrepreneurial city, and we certainly over-index in terms of the talent of our women.

“But I think we must say that our women wouldn’t shine like they do without the full support of the many wonderful men, and that I’m truly proud of as well, that we do have the support of a fully inclusive city, and that’s why we see the entrepreneurial and strong businesswomen that we’re celebrating here this evening.”

The Gold Coast Bulletin Women of the Year awards by Harvey Norman winners are announced at a glitzy awards dinner at The Star Gold Coast on November 16.
