A balaclava-wearing intruder has assaulted a woman with a can of food after they were disturbed rummaging through her Gold Coast home in the early hours of Monday morning.

A Queensland Police Service (QPS) spokesman said a 31-year-old woman was woken by the offender inside her property on Mullingar Place, Carrara about 2am.

The woman’s partner, a 35-year-old man, confronted the intruder before things escalated.

The masked man allegedly turned violent, grabbing a tin of food and hurling it at the woman before escaping through a rear sliding door.

The QPS spokesman said a number of officers responded to the incident and started patrols of the area but were unable to locate the person of interest.

Nobody was injured during the incident and there was no property taken.

The offender was wearing a grey hoodie and black balaclava.

Anyone with information or relevant dash cam or CCTV footage from the area is urged to call police on 131 444 or make a report via Crime Stoppers.
