Man allegedly shot himself in the leg by accident at Coomera home

A man who was allegedly shot in the leg outside a Gold Coast home has been slapped with a string of charges by police. Read why.

A man shot in the leg and left bleeding on the driveway of a Gold Coast home accidentally fired the weapon at himself, police will allege.

The 23-year-old Coopers Plains man was found by emergency services on the ground outside the Cirrus Way East property at Coomera about 6am on Sunday December 22. Police had been responding to a reported disturbance.

The man was rushed to Gold Coast University Hospital where he underwent surgery. A crime scene was established at the home and detectives door knocked neighbouring properties and spoke with residents. Forensics crews allegedly found a spent shotgun shell at the address and it was collected as evidence.

Following extensive police inquiries, detectives have charged the victim with one count each of unlawful possession of a weapon, possession of a shortened firearm, and dangerous conduct of a weapon.

Police allege the man accidentally discharged the shortened shotgun, firing the round into his leg.

He has been remanded in custody to face Southport Magistrates Court on February 17.

The weapon allegedly involved in the shooting has been recovered by police.
