Police are looking for five teenage girls who stole alcohol from a Gold Coast bottle shop, despite multiple attempts from the public to stop them.
Gold Coast police Superintendent Brett Jackson said five juveniles entered a BWS store on Southport-Nerang Rd in Ashmore about 5.20pm on Saturday.
The girls allegedly started to take alcohol off the shelves including cans of pre-mixed drinks and bottles of wine.
“A number of members of the public were shopping at the time and tried to intervene as it was clear the females did not intend to purchase the items,” Superintendent Jackson said.
“One of the females has picked up a bottle of wine and raised it in a threatening manner.”
Those members of the public then backed away from the group and the girls fled the scene with the stolen alcohol.
“While we do thank the members of the public for intervening, they did make the right decision in stepping aside,” Superintendent Jackson said.
“We don’t want to see anyone injured as a result of this sort of behaviour.”
Police were called to the scene but were unable to find the girls.
“We have clear CCTV footage of those offenders and we will be following up with them,” Superintendent Jackson said.
Just hours later, a 7/11 store attendant was assaulted after a group of youths allegedly stole lollies and soft drinks.
Superintendent Jackson said the group entered the convenience store on Old Pacific Highway in Oxenford about 9.50pm on Saturday.
“This group has stolen confectionery, soft drinks and chips,” he said.
“The attendant has identified they had no intention of paying for the items and has tried to stop them.
“One of the juveniles has then turned and assaulted the attendant.
“Fortunately he was not seriously injured.”
Police quickly responded to the theft and found the group a short distance from the 7/11 along with the alleged stolen items.
“The juveniles, ranging from 12 to 17 years old, were taken home and will be dealt with under the Youth Justice Act,” Superintendent Jackson said.
