Six players registered 30 disposals or more and went at 75 per cent efficiency at the weekend. Check out the numbers for every player right here.

Getting the ball 30 times or more, as 11 players did in the GFNL over the weekend, is one thing – disposing of it effectively is another.

Of those 11 players, six managed to go at 75 per cent efficiency or more with ball in hand.

Geelong West’s Baxter Mensch picked up the second-most disposals for the round during his side’s 38-point win over St Albans (46), of which 39 were effective (84.78 per cent).

His teammate Noah Gribble was not too far behind, finishing the game with 38 disposals, 29 of those effective (76.32 per cent).

Another Giant cracked the 30-disposal mark, Ethan Liddle racking up 30 touches, 23 of them effective (76.67 per cent).

North Shore co-coach Nicholas Dixon continued his stellar season in his side’s 54-point loss to Leopold, finishing with 36 disposals of which 28 were effective (77.78 per cent).

Bell Park captain Lachlan Patten led the way for his side during their 70-point loss to South Barwon, finishing with 31 disposals, 27 of them effective (87.1 per cent).

Newtown & Chilwell’s Blake Sutterby rounded out the effective ball users, finishing with 30 disposals, 23 of them effective (76.67 per cent), during the Eagles three-point loss to Colac.

Contested possessions

In what were some trying conditions in Geelong on Saturday, three players led the way in contested possessions, each picking up 20 or more.

St Joseph’s midfielder James Gow led the way, finishing his side’s 20-point win over Lara with 25 contested possessions.

Leopold’s Marcus Thompson wasn’t too far behind, racking up 23 contested possessions in the Lions 54-point win over North Shore.

Dragons skipper Lachlan Patten picked up 21 contested possessions in his side’s loss.

Tackles

The stats box for North Shore’s clash with Leopold was full of big performances and the tackles category was no different, five players finishing the game with double-digit tackles.

Leopold’s Dylan O’Brien (17) led the way.

Teammate Logan Wagener was not too far behind with 14, as was fellow Lion Rob Maibaum with 11.

North Shore co-coach Nicholas Dixon finished with 11 tackles to lead his side, Kobe Annand close behind with 10.

Only one other player across the round was able to register double-digit tackles, that being St Mary’s star Harry Benson (10).

Hit-outs

North Shore’s clash with Leopold delivered big hitout numbers too, Seagulls big man Kobe Annand finishing with 42, while Lions ruckman Kyle Bumpstead finished the win with 35.

Geelong West ruckman Tylar Watts dominated in this category his side’s win over St Albans, finishing with a game-high 33 hit-outs.

St Joseph’s big man Dylan Sharp and Colac’s Henry Walsh (30 each) were the only other players to register 30 hit-outs across the round.

Standouts

Colac co-coach Darcy Lang made sure to give his forward line plenty of opportunities in the Tigers three-point win over Newtown & Chilwell, finishing with 11 inside 50s.

Lang was the only player to crack double-digits in this category across the round.

North Shore’s Jack Leonard was a standout with his contested marking at the weekend, finishing with a round-high eight.

St Joseph’s Paddy De Grandi was next best with five.

Colac spoils Eagles perfect start

A spirited come-from-behind performance from Colac has ended Newtown & Chilwell’s perfect start to the year.

Despite just scraping across the line in a three-point thriller, Colac was costly in front of goal, kicking 9.21 (75) to 11.6 (72) against the Eagles.

Colac co-coach Rowan McSparron said the conditions played a massive part in the game.

“It was really trying conditions, with sleeting rain and a strong wind made it a challenge for both teams,” he said.

“If we had the numbers out and we were free we tried to move the ball quickly, but at times it just wasn’t an option.

“Newtown & Chilwell has improved immensely, they’ve got some great young players and they’re on the right track.”

Trailing by a goal at the final break, the Tigers kicked 2.5 to the Eagles’ 1.2 to clinch a memorable victory and leave both sides on 4-1 after the opening five rounds.

Newtown & Chilwell coach Damien McMahon said it was “a hard-fought contest”.

“It was a game that was heavily affected by the conditions, but in saying that I thought we’d run away with it,” he said.”

“They had the breeze in the last quarter but it was dropping off a fair bit and I thought we could hold on.

“There’s a lot of learnings to take out of the game, they’ve been a top-two side for the last five years and we matched it with them for most of the game.

“Our pressure made them be as inaccurate as they were, but we had chances late to win and didn’t convert.”

Bell Park v South Barwon

The Swans had 12 individual goal kickers as they made a statement against the Dragons.

South Barwon ran out 21.18 (144) to 11.8 (74) winners against Bell Park to hold onto fourth spot on the ladder, with Daniel Semmens and Todd White two of the Swans’ best players.

Leopold v North Shore

The Lions stormed home to claim a 54-point victory against the rapidly-improving Seagulls.

North Shore’s Herschelle Carr kicked three and Sam Witherden was deemed best on ground, but Leopold still ran away with a 19.16 (130) to 11.10 (76) win.

St Albans v Geelong West

An inaccurate Geelong West was still too strong for St Albans, claiming a 48-point win.

The Giants kicked 9.16 (70) to the Supersaints’ 4.8 (32), with Geelong West’s midfield mix proving too strong in the contest.

St Joseph’s v Lara

Conditions were a factor for St Joseph’s clash with Lara, with Joeys running out 20-point victors in a wet and windy contest.

St Joseph’s kicked an inaccurate 8.22 (70), while Lara slotted 7.8 (50) in a game that propelled Joeys into the top four and left Lara winless.

St Mary’s v Grovedale

St Mary’s recorded its second-most scoring shots for the season with 40 against the Tigers, but only managed to kick 16.24 (120) to Grovedale’s 5.14 (44) in the trying conditions.

Pat Dowling kicked another three goals, while Nick Nott and Max Augerinos were St Mary’s best players against the Tigers.
