A woman was found dead in the water at a Great Ocean Road beach on Saturday morning.

Details about the incident and the victim are still not clear.

Victoria Police said they would prepare a report for the coroner after the deceased woman was found in the ocean near Apollo Bay’s back beach about 9.30am.

Emergency services attended the scene, but the woman could not be revived.

She is yet to be identified, and the death is not being treated as suspicious.

The waters off Apollo Bay can be treacherous and several people have lost their lives there.

In March last year, Indian national Jil Khokhara died and two others were hospitalised in a critical condition after they hit trouble at Marengo beach, just outside Apollo Bay.

Just two weeks later, three people were hospitalised after five people were pulled from a rip near the same location.
