A bit of Las Vegas could be coming to Geelong West with plans for an elopement wedding venue lodged with council.

Under plans from Big Love Elopements, the home of a former tattoo removalist would be transformed into a “funky, fun and gorgeous” boutique wedding venue in the Pakington Arcade.

Big Love Elopements co-owner and celebrant Jessie Walsdorf, who has officiated at 300 weddings in the past five years, said if Geelong council ticked off on plans the venue could open in mid-March.

“A lot of people are re-evaluating what’s important to them and the finances of a huge wedding; elopements are just the way to go,” Ms Walsdorf said.

“It doesn’t have to be a boring experience; we pump so much personality into the weddings.”

The 5m by 6m venue will have enough space to fit about 20 people, and offer packages include a “20-minute” wedding.

Ms Walsdorf said she tested the bona fides of a couple which wanted to marry.

“As my role as celebrant I have to make sure they know the legal process and the importance of marriage; and consent to marriage.

“We have to lodge a notice of intention to marriage at least 30 days before. It is not a shotgun wedding. I meet with the couple and make sure it’s all legit.”

Ms Walsdorf said the venue could accommodate themed weddings if clients wanted to supply decorations and outfits.

Big Love Elopements staff include three celebrants, a photographer, a videographer and a musician. Catering and drinks are also available.

Co-owner Jake Hogan said the company wanted to perform about 20 ceremonies per year.

“Most of our elopements would be over lunchtime, with occasional bookings around 4 or 5pm so they can get married before heading elsewhere for dinner to celebrate,” Mr Hogan said.

“Previously couples would have to go to the Registry Office in Melbourne to get married in such a way. We are offering it in a beautifully styled space, that attracts people to our region. “Our client base comes from all over Victoria, and we love that we get to put Geelong on the map for a beautiful place to celebrate love.”

Council is taking public comment on the plans which are available on its website.
