Lovely Banks man Jye Vessey refused bail after alleged public indecency

A Lovely Banks man allegedly performed an indecent act in front of a popular Corio community centre.

A Lovely Banks man who allegedly exposed and touched himself in front of a community centre has been refused bail.

Two employees working near the Rosewall Community Centre in Corio told police they allegedly saw Jye Vessey, 33, had his pants around his knees and was performing an indecent act.

Police arrived on the scene quickly and found Mr Vessey.

While lodging his belongings, officers allegedly found Mr Vessey in possession of 2.6 grams worth of heroin wrapped in foil.

In addition to public exposure charges, Mr Vessey faced the Geelong Magistrates Court on Tuesday for alleged thefts across Corio.

The court heard Mr Vessey allegedly stole more than $1,000 worth of alcohol from a Liquorland and BWS in Corio and groceries from an APCO Service Station located in North Geelong during this month.

He also allegedly attempted to steal more than $496 worth of meat items from Woolworths in Corio but left a full trolley in the store and exited without it when he was approached by security guards.

Mr Vessey, who self-represented himself during an application for bail, told the court he was “sick” but had been denied treatment from his doctors so turned to “self-medicating” with drugs.

He told Magistrate Franz Holzer he was unable to afford drugs, which allegedly “led me to go over a month stealing alcohol”.

Mr Vessey added he has used drugs on and off for around 12 years and told the court “it doesn’t get much worse than it does now”.

Prosecution submitted that Mr Vessey had been offered a number of community-based services to get him help but he did not show up to appointments and contravened several court-ordered conditions.

“He (says) he needs help, but he needs to want that help and to engage with the services that are offered to him,” police said.

Magistrate Franz Holzer agreed with this submission, telling Mr Vessey he was “not doing much about” finding help.

Mr Holzer also added Mr Vessey came before the court with a “significant” history that includes a number of other thefts.

“It’s the same matter repeating itself. It’s low-level, it’s annoying perhaps, and significant for the businesses concerned,” Mr Holzer said.

Mr Vessey will return to the court later this month.
