Four emergency service crews respond to hazardous material incident in Lara

Four patients required medical assistance after toxic fumes started emitting from batteries at Barwon Prison on Tuesday.

UPDATE: Four staff members from the Barwon Prison corrections centre required medical attention on Tuesday after a hazardous materials scare.

Fire Rescue Victoria responded to the incident just after 11am after a Triple Zero call was made, with crews arriving to find toxic fumes emitting from batteries.

An FRV spokesman said firefighters and Victoria Police attended the scene to make the area safe, with four patients requiring assistance from Ambulance Victoria.

“No one went to Hospital,” the FRV spokesman said.

“Staff were assessed by Ambulance Victoria and returned to normal duties.”

An Ambulance Victoria spokeswoman confirmed they were called to the incident on Bacchus Marsh Road in Lara.

“Paramedics assessed several people at the scene however no emergency treatment or transport was required,” she said.

Four emergency services vehicles responded to the incident.

Corrections Victoria have been contacted but have so far declined to comment.

EARLIER: Emergency services are responding to a hazmat incident at Barwon Prison involving multiple vehicles.

Four units are currently attending a potential hazardous materials fire at the Bacchus Marsh Road facility in Lara.

Fire Rescue Victoria first responded to the event at 11.27am.
