Covid closes North Geelong tip as Greater Geelong records 32 new cases

Council has closed a Geelong tip after an attendee tested positive for Covid, but it’s not believed any customers are in isolation.

The City of Greater Geelong closed a North Geelong tip after a person who attended tested positive for Covid.

“We have been informed a recent attendee of the Geelong Resource Recovery Centre, located at Duoro Street in North Geelong, on 5 and 6 November between 7.15am and 5pm has since returned a positive COVID-19 test,” council said on social media on Thursday.

“We have temporarily closed the Geelong Resource Recovery Centre while we work with the Department of Health.”

COGG City Services director Guy Wilson-Browne said all close contacts had been notified and were following health directions, but there was no requirement for customers or other contractors to isolate.

“Yesterday afternoon we were informed by our contractor, Geelong Disabled People’s Industries (GDP), operator of the Geelong Resource Recovery Centre, that a person who had attended the site has since returned a positive COVID-19 test result,’ he said.

“The centre is closed until further notice and prominent signage has been placed onsite to notify customers who are unaware of the closure.”

Mr Wilson-Browne said the centre had a comprehensive Covid-safe plan in place.

The centre is a drop off point for excess domestic waste, recycling computer equipment and white goods.

Thirty-two new cases were reported for Greater Geelong on Thursday, while the Surf Coast recorded one new case.

As of 9am Thursday there were 15 patients in Geelong hospital with Covid-19, 11 of whom were in ICU.

Victoria reported 1313 new cases and four deaths.
